2027 International Trailer Award Winners Announced Lightweighting and Intelligence Set the Innovation Agenda

Date:Sep 07, 2026   Edit:Admin    Views:128

Ahead of IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, the winners of the 2027 International Trailer Award have been announced. A total of 57 innovative products competed this year across four categories, judged by a jury of 15 journalists from leading European trade media on the core criteria of practicality and innovation. The winning solutions highlight three major innovation trends across the global trailer industry: electrification-driven weight reduction, intelligent operations and maintenance (O&M), and high-utilization design. As a leading Chinese supplier of semi-trailer suspensions, axles and air suspensions, Zonxin stays closely attuned to these trends, providing lightweight, high-reliability and integratable running gear products in response to the global trailer technology upgrade.

Four categories, four winners. In the Body category, the winner is the new Schmitz S.KO City refrigerated semi-trailer, equipped with a dual-temperature refrigeration unit and capable of carrying 22 Euro pallets. It features a single 10-tonne steered axle and an offset kingpin for optimized weight distribution, and is positioned as an electrified alternative to box vans. In the Chassis category, the winner is the all-new KÖGEL Light Plus E-Optimized semi-trailer chassis, developed specifically for electric tractors: by moving the axle group forward by 30 cm, it reduces the load on the tractor's drive axle by up to 2 tonnes, offsetting the added weight of batteries and electric motors to avoid overloading. In the Future category, the winner is the Krone TrAIler Health vehicle management system, which collects data from sensors mounted on the trailer and uses AI to automatically generate health reports covering tire pressure, brake temperature and the status of onboard auxiliary equipment. In the Components category, the winner is the Cargobull K.MFS modular floor system, based on interchangeable modules — all 15 modules can be replaced in under 3 hours, with trailer utilization expected to rise by 29%.

What the industry can learn: three innovation threads. First, electrification is forcing weight reduction — the Chassis award winner confirms the urgent need to lightweight running gear for electric tractors; weight-saving design of axles and suspensions is shifting from an "optimization" to a "must-have." Second, intelligent O&M is accelerating — AI-based health monitoring and condition monitoring are becoming standard for trailers, demanding higher reliability and maintenance-free performance from components. Third, high-utilization component innovation — modular, quick-change designs turn component innovation directly into operational gains, a growing focus for OEMs and fleets worldwide.

Zonxin: "hard-core" components for the upgrade. A national high-tech enterprise founded in 2008, Zonxin operates a Shandong Academician Workstation and holds 8 invention patents and over 70 patents in total, certified to IATF 16949 and ISO 9001. Its annual capacity covers 30,000 sets of mechanical suspension systems, 12,000 axles of air suspension systems and 42,000 axles, with products sold to more than 20 provinces and cities in China and exported to over 10 countries. Benchmarking global trailer innovation, the company continues to build three core strengths:

Lightweight efficiency. The third-generation lightweight air suspension reduces total running-gear weight by 160 kg; combined with aluminum alloy wheels, it directly answers the weight-reduction needs of electric tractors.

High-reliability load bearing. Core products such as the single-axle rear suspension assembly (2900100L/R) feature high-strength integrated design and pass million-cycle fatigue testing as well as non-destructive testing and metallographic inspection; maintenance-free suspensions/axles (3 years / 500,000 km) meet the "low-maintenance, high-availability" requirements of the intelligent O&M trend.

New-energy and intelligent adaptation. Zonxin is developing lightweight, low-noise air suspensions and lightweight axle assemblies for electric-drive vehicles, positioning itself early in the emerging electrified chassis components market.

With more than 95% of components produced in-house and a 7-day fast delivery system, Zonxin supplies trailer manufacturers that support major OEMs such as Sinotruk, Foton and Dongfeng, and ships in volume to more than 20 countries across Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia and Central Asia — a "China-made" response to the global trailer industry upgrade.
