Trailer Lightweighting Accelerates: BPW Unveils 20 kg Lighter Axle Technology at IAA 2026

Date:Sep 24, 2026   Edit:Admin    Views:88

Lightweighting is becoming an increasingly important direction in trailer chassis technology as transport operators seek higher payload capacity, lower fuel consumption and reduced operating costs.

At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany, BPW unveiled its next-generation Wheelend ECO Pro for the European 9-ton trailer axle segment. The new wheel-end system reduces axle weight by 20 kg per axle, while offering an eight-year warranty with no mileage limit upon registration.

20 kg Weight Reduction per Axle

According to BPW, the new Wheelend ECO Pro has been specifically developed for 9-ton axles equipped with ET 120 disc brakes, one of the major axle configurations in the European trailer market.

Through a redesigned wheel hub, bearing system, axle nut concept and wheel-end-to-axle interface, BPW has reduced weight while maintaining the required strength and durability.

For a typical three-axle trailer, the 20 kg saving per axle represents approximately 60 kg of additional payload capacity. When combined with BPW's Airlight II air suspension and LightTube trailing arm, the total saving can reach 34 kg per axle, or more than 100 kg across a three-axle trailer.

The new wheel end also incorporates a patent-pending bionic design for the hub and brake disc. By optimising material distribution according to load paths, the design aims to achieve a balance between structural strength, durability and reduced weight.

BPW has also focused on rolling efficiency and maintenance. The redesigned bearing system reduces internal friction, while the established ECO service concept allows rapid wheel-end removal and brake disc replacement without additional tools. Small-scale production is planned for 2027, with series production expected from 2030.

Lightweight Axle Technology Becomes a Key Trend

The BPW development reflects a broader trend in the global trailer industry: lightweighting is no longer limited to individual components but is increasingly becoming a system-level engineering strategy.

For trailer manufacturers and fleet operators, reducing unsprung and dead weight can create additional payload capacity while potentially improving fuel efficiency and vehicle operating economics. The challenge is to achieve weight reduction without compromising axle strength, braking performance, durability and serviceability.

This is also an important direction for Zonxin, a Chinese manufacturer specializing in semi-trailer axles and suspension systems.

Zonxin Lightweight Axles: Reducing Weight While Maintaining Reliability

Zonxin has developed a range of lightweight axle and wheel-end solutions for semi-trailers, including lightweight disc brake axles, aluminum alloy wheel-end assemblies and maintenance-free axle solutions.

At the 2025 China Commercial Vehicles Show, Zonxin presented its lightweight maintenance-free axle series and an ultra-lightweight disc brake axle equipped with an aluminum alloy wheel-end assembly.

The lightweight maintenance-free axle weighs approximately 305 kg per axle and is designed for long-term low-maintenance operation, with a stated maintenance-free period of up to 3 years or 500,000 km under applicable operating conditions.

Zonxin's ultra-lightweight disc brake axle with an aluminum alloy wheel-end assembly weighs approximately 248 kg, representing a weight reduction of more than 22% compared with conventional configurations. The product is designed around lightweight materials and high-strength structural engineering to meet the requirements of modern commercial trailers.

Zonxin has also continued to develop aluminum alloy wheel-end technology. Its latest patented axle hub and hub-brake-disc integrated structure focus on combining lightweight design with improved heat dissipation. The patented designs use specially arranged heat-dissipation grooves and passages to improve thermal management while reducing component weight.

Lightweighting Extends Beyond the Axle

Zonxin's lightweight strategy is not limited to axle assemblies.

The company has also developed lightweight air suspension systems and other trailer running-gear components. According to Zonxin, its third-generation lightweight air suspension can reduce the overall weight of the vehicle running gear by approximately 160 kg, while lightweight axle assemblies have also been developed for new-energy commercial vehicles.

The company's product portfolio currently covers American-type axles, German-type axles, disc brake axles, oil-lubricated axles, aluminum alloy wheel hubs, air suspensions and other trailer running-gear products.

With lightweighting becoming increasingly important in long-distance logistics, electric commercial vehicles and high-efficiency trailer applications, the integration of lightweight axles, suspension systems and aluminum alloy wheel-end components is expected to become an important development direction for trailer chassis technology.

For trailer manufacturers and fleet operators, the objective is not simply to make a component lighter, but to achieve a balanced solution combining lower weight, sufficient load capacity, braking performance, durability, low maintenance requirements and lifecycle economics.

Zonxin will continue to invest in lightweight axle and suspension technologies, providing global trailer manufacturers with more efficient and reliable running-gear solutions.
